The school calendar is the one schedule in your family that never made it onto a phone. Every team has an app with an export button somewhere. The district has a PDF, posted in August, printed once, and now curling on the fridge behind a magnet — and iPhone's Add Subscribed Calendar screen wants a link you simply do not have.
There is no setting that solves that, because the problem is not on the Apple side. A designed year calendar with month grids and a coded footnote list is a document, not a feed. It has to become real events before anything can subscribe to it.
This guide covers both halves: getting the PDF read into actual calendar events, then getting those onto your iPhone through the buried Settings path — or, if you would rather not type a URL with your thumbs, through a one-tap button in an email. Ten minutes, most of it spent finding the PDF.
Get the PDF off your district's site. Look for "Calendar," "Academic Calendar," or "District Calendar" — it is usually one PDF covering the entire year. If your only copy is the crumpled one from the bottom of a backpack, take a clear photo of it; PNG and JPG work exactly as well as a PDF here.
Create a free Schedule Caddie account. A minute to sign up, no cost. This is where the school days live once they exist, next to any team schedules you have already added.
Upload it at schedulecaddie.com/school. PDF, PNG, or JPG up to 10MB. Schedule Caddie reads the document and extracts the dated entries parents actually need: no-school days, breaks and vacations, early releases with their dismissal times, teacher days, and the first and last day of school.
Review what it found. Every date comes back as a checkable row with the label it read off the page. Uncheck what you do not want, fix anything misread, and nothing touches your calendar until you confirm.
Confirm. The days you approved land on your calendar in their own School category, so an early-release Friday is visually distinct from a 6pm game.
Nothing is added until you approve this list. Every day it found gets a row, checked by default, showing the date and the label read off the document — so a misread date is a two-second fix here rather than a surprise half day in November.

Create a subscribe link in Schedule Caddie. Under Subscribe & Share, build a feed covering the kids and event types you want on your phone. You get a feed URL back — one link carrying your whole family, school days included.
Open Settings on your iPhone (not the Calendar app). This is the part everyone hunts for. Subscribed calendars are added through Settings, not from inside the Calendar app itself, which is why searching the Calendar app for an "add" button never turns anything up.
Go to Settings → Apps → Calendar → Calendar Accounts. On older iOS versions Calendar sits directly in the Settings list rather than under Apps — if you do not see Apps, look for Calendar on its own.
Tap Add Account → Other → Add Subscribed Calendar. Paste the feed URL from Schedule Caddie into the Server field and tap Next, then Save. The school days appear in the Calendar app alongside everything else.
Or let the email do it for you. If you would rather not type a URL on a phone keyboard, open the shared calendar page and use "Add to my phone" to send yourself the subscribe email. It carries a one-tap "Add to iPhone / Apple Calendar" button that performs the webcal:// handoff for you — worth knowing because Gmail strips webcal links, so the button routes through an https page that does the jump.
Worth knowing before you rely on it: a subscribed calendar on iOS updates on a polling schedule that Apple controls, and it will never announce that something changed. The event just quietly becomes different. That is the specific gap Schedule Caddie fills — we re-check every feed daily and email you what actually moved, so your calendar can be somewhere you glance rather than something you audit.
I pasted the link and nothing appeared in the Calendar app
Open the Calendar app, tap Calendars at the bottom, and check that the new subscribed calendar is ticked. iOS adds it switched on by default, but if you have a long list it is easy to have tapped it off while hunting for something else.
The link opens Safari instead of adding a calendar
That happens when an https feed URL is tapped as a normal web link. Either paste it into Settings → Add Subscribed Calendar as above, or use the one-tap button in the subscribe email, which is built to hand iOS a webcal:// URL rather than a web page.
My iPhone is slow to show a change I made
iOS decides for itself how often to refresh a subscribed calendar, and you can nudge it under Settings → Apps → Calendar → Calendar Accounts → Fetch New Data. Even at its most eager it is a polling schedule, not a notification — which is why Schedule Caddie emails you when something moves instead of leaving you to notice it.
The photo of the calendar is over the 10MB limit
Most published calendar PDFs are well under a megabyte, but a full-resolution phone photo can go over. Use the PDF from the website if there is one, or retake the photo at a lower resolution.
Only if your school publishes a calendar feed, and most do not — they publish a PDF for the year. Add Subscribed Calendar needs a URL ending in .ics, and a PDF is a document, not a feed. Import the PDF into Schedule Caddie first, then subscribe to the link it gives you.
Apple keeps that flow in Settings rather than in the app: Settings → Apps → Calendar → Calendar Accounts → Add Account → Other → Add Subscribed Calendar. On older iOS versions Calendar appears directly in Settings instead of under Apps. It is a genuinely buried path, and it is the single most common reason people give up on this.
A calendar you subscribe to on your iPhone is attached to that device unless you are signed into iCloud and have Calendars turned on for it, in which case it can propagate. If you want it reliably on several devices, the simplest approach is to add the same subscribe link on each one — it is the same URL every time.
You upload the new PDF and Schedule Caddie compares it against what you already have, showing you exactly what is added, changed, or removed before applying anything. A school PDF is a document rather than a live URL, so there is nothing for us to poll — team feeds are different, and those we re-check every day on our own.

Yes, and that is the point of doing this at all. Team schedules arrive as feeds, the school calendar arrives as an upload, and they end up on one calendar together — so the no-school Monday and the 4pm practice are visible in the same place instead of one of them being on the fridge.
