SportsEngine Calendar Not Updating? Slow and Broken Look Identical

A practice moved in SportsEngine this morning and your phone still shows the old time at pickup. Nine times out of ten nothing is broken — subscribed calendars refresh on a lag measured in hours-to-a-day, silently. The other tenth is a stale link: last season's team, an old team-site feed, or a duplicate.

The five causes below are ordered by how often they turn out to be the answer, with the fix for each. Two minutes to diagnose, five to fix.

The five causes, most likely first

The #1 cause: your calendar app is slow, and that’s normal

Google refreshes subscribed feeds on its own cycle — Google doesn't publish the interval, but the team-app vendors consistently describe it as roughly 12 hours and up to 24. iPhones poll on their own schedule too, and only the Mac Calendar app offers a per-calendar auto-refresh setting. If the game shows the new time on SportsEngine's own site but the old time on your phone, the feed is fine — your phone just hasn't looked yet. Removing and re-adding the subscription forces a fresh pull.

You subscribed to a team page feed, not your MySE account

SportsEngine's current, documented path is Sync Schedule from your MySE account (the member account that aggregates every team you're registered for), then Other Calendar → Copy. Older guides point at a Subscribe or Export option on an individual team website. Those links can still work, but a team site feed only knows that one team — and if the club rebuilt its site, it may have gone stale. Re-copy from MySE and replace the subscription.

The feed points at last season

Clubs often create a fresh team for each season. A subscription copied in the spring keeps pointing at the spring team, which simply stops getting events. Open MySE, confirm the current season's team is listed, and copy a new Sync Schedule link.

Every game shows twice

You're subscribed to the same schedule two ways — typically the MySE feed plus an older team-site feed, or the feed in both Google and Apple on the same phone. Remove one. In Google, that's Settings → the calendar → Unsubscribe; on iPhone, Settings → Calendar → Accounts → the subscribed calendar → Delete.

The calendar is genuinely empty (not slow — empty)

Paste the feed URL into a browser tab. If you see text starting with BEGIN:VCALENDAR, the feed works and the problem is on the calendar app side — remove and re-add it. If you get an error page or a login prompt, the link itself is dead; copy a fresh one from MySE.

Frequently asked questions

Can I force Google Calendar or my iPhone to refresh a subscribed calendar?

Not on Google or iPhone — neither has a per-calendar refresh button, so removing and re-adding the subscription is the way to force an immediate pull. The Mac Calendar app does let you set a per-calendar auto-refresh interval. Either way it's a background pull, not a notification.

Will I get a notification when a SportsEngine game is rescheduled?

Not from a subscribed calendar — they update silently. SportsEngine's own app notifications are separate (and have their own problems; see the notifications guide below). Schedule Caddie watches the same SportsEngine feed every hour and emails you exactly what changed: old time, new time, which team.

Where do I find my SportsEngine calendar link again?

Sign in to your MySE account, open the Schedule tab, click Sync Schedule (top right), choose Other Calendar, then Copy. The full walkthrough is in the SportsEngine calendar-link guide.

Does deleting and re-adding the subscription lose anything?

No. A subscribed calendar is a live view of the feed, not a copy — removing it just stops your phone showing it, and re-adding it pulls the current schedule fresh. Nothing on SportsEngine's side changes.

My kid is on several teams and I keep playing whack-a-mole with this

That's the honest limit of subscribing app-by-app in Google or Apple: every feed lags on its own cycle, nothing tells you what changed, and each season means re-copying links. Schedule Caddie takes the SportsEngine link plus the TeamSnap, GameChanger or school feeds, checks all of them hourly, emails you the changes, and gives you one calendar to put on your phone.

How current is this?

The MySE → Sync Schedule → Other Calendar → Copy path comes from SportsEngine's own current help article (linked above) as of September 2026, and the refresh behavior is Google's and Apple's documented design. If your SportsEngine screens look different, tell us and we'll fix the page.
